Becoming a Camp Counselor

Author: TeachNPlay

If you’re looking for a summer job but want to do something a little more fulfilling than flipping burgers, look into the possibility of becoming a counselor at a summer camp. While some of these positions are strictly on a volunteer basis, others pay a small stipend. But the issue of money will be nothing compared to the idea that you’ll be setting a good example for all those young campers.

If you decide to take this kind of job, make sure that you come prepared with lots of games and activities that you can play with the kids. One great option is brining a cache of board games for kids such as Chutes and Ladders or Monopoly. These fun and interactive games are a great way to build camaraderie and keep the children entertained during slow periods of the day.

Playing with strategy board games is a great way for parents to get involved in educating their children while having fun. Starting a Family Game Night

Author: TeachNPlay

It’s a well accepted idea that families that spend time together are more connected. That’s why so many families have turned to a family game night. This is one night out of every week that everyone in the family agrees to meet at the house to spend some time together. For some families, this means dusting off the DVD collection and enjoying a film together, and for other families it means rediscovering all those board games for children that usually sit unused in the closet.

For an added benefit, choose educational games for kids as the centerpiece of your game night. This doesn’t have to be something overt, otherwise you risk alienating your kids. But it can be something interactive and fun that still stretches the mental muscles. Even games like Scattergories can be raucous, creative, and fun, but they definitely offer some real educational value in their ability to foster creative thinking. For added creative value, let your kid develop their own game that everyone can play!

Family Game Night

Author: TeachNPlay

My husband recently got a schedule change at work and now we’re able to spend most evenings together. Because of this we have a designated family game night where we play our favorite board games. We got bored of Monopoly and Hi-Ho Cherry-O pretty quickly, but we found some great non-secular games online.

Our game collection has grown with some educational board games like Trivial Pursuit, Life, Scrabble and Cranium. Sometimes we even pull out our favorite childhood games like Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders, however, this does not happen often as we try to instill a worldly sense of knowledge to our children and these kiddy games are more fun that educational.

Memories with Candy Land

Author: TeachNPlay

Candy Land was one of my favorite childhood board games. Actually, if it wasn’t buried in my parents’ basement somewhere on the other side of the country, it would probably still be one of my favorite games as an adult. It’s one of many classic board games that has been around since the childhood of most of our parents and will hopefully remain in play for my own children someday and other future generations to come.

Designed by Eleanor Abbott in 1945, the game was purchased by the Milton Bradley Company, which was later bought out by Hasbro games, and first published in 1949. Of the many board games for kids, Candy Land is a game for nearly all ages because it is a simple racing game that requires no reading an very little math skills.

What to Play on a Stormy Day

What to Play on a Stormy Day

When I was young, there was only one way you could keep me inside during the summer: a massive thunderstorm. I can still remember waking up early and preparing to grab my bike from the garage before noticing how little light was filtering in through the windows. Luckily I come from a large family, and we could always find something to do in doors. More often than not this meant sitting down and enjoying a board game.

At a very early age I stuck to Candy Land and other board games for kids. Eventually I graduated to checkers and my personal favorite, chess. Dad was the undisputed chess champion, and my siblings and I would take turns challenging him for the crown – with very little success. It’s a shame we didn’t get all that much practice, because the second the sun came out I was back to basking in the warm summer air.

Learning Important Lessons through Games

Author: TeachNPlay

educationalgamesboard-playingiseducational.jpgWhen children learn, it’s more often through interaction than it is through memorization.  When children play games that are educational, it’s common for them to learn a great deal of information through nothing more than the simple practice of play.  Educational games have gained popularity in the last decades, especially with personal computers becoming common to most American households.  When you interact with a child through play of an educational game, you are teaching them social skills and also helping them to learn.  There’s no better activity for children than educational games to set them on the right path to real life success.

Parents of children of all ages should strive to take time out of their week to play games with their children.  Whether it’s a simple shell memory game or something more advanced, you’re fostering your child’s future growth!

Let Them Discover Independence While Under A Parent’s Watchfull Eye

Children learn through play.  As the toddler grows into the young child his interest widens.  More and more, educational kids games will interest him.  Puzzles and simple crafts will catch his attention and he will spend longer hours working on them.  Even at this age, the child will still need parent supervision but clearly, he is on his way to discovering independence.

Educational games for kids are bonding moments, with the parent, sibling or friend.  They are obviously using their minds when putting together a puzzle but there are benefits that are not immediately apparent. The game appears to be simple, yet experts say that they nevertheless require conceptual and social skills. Dealing with a playmate, for example, can be stressful at this stage.  Suffice it to say that even the simplest of games can be a learning experience.
